Why You Should Start Your Day With a Cup of Keto Coffee

By: Jhady Arana November 10th, 2017

Science has long shown us that coffee has a vast number of health benefits. One great example is that coffee is rich in antioxidants, which can defend the body against the harmful effects of free radicals that can bring about various illnesses.

The body creates free radicals when exposed to sunlight, or as byproducts of metabolism of certain foods. Coffee can reduce your risk of developing type-2 diabetes because it can help keep blood sugar levels low, as well as ensuring they remain stable.

Did you know that coffee could also help you get through the day with seemingly limitless energy? In this article, we’ll explain how you can “supercharge” your daily cup of java.

What is Keto Coffee?

Also known as “bulletproof” coffee, it is coffee that has healthy fats added to it. Although it may initially sound unappealing, keto coffee can be surprisingly tasty if it made properly. Even dieters who are engaged in intermittent fasting for weight loss take keto coffee, so that they have energy even with less food intake.

“Bulletproof” coffee gets its name from entrepreneur David Asprey. While on a trip to Tibet, he noted that residents mixed yak milk with their tea. After noting how this traditional tea blend was an energizing way to begin the morning, Asprey decided to create his own version of the brew.

Keto coffee is a combination of coffee and healthy fats, particularly grass-fed butter, and medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) oils. It follows the principles of the ketogenic diet, also known as a low-carb high-fat diet. The purpose of the diet is to induce a state of ketosis in the body, by reducing the consumption of carbohydrates.

Ketosis is a state where the body breaks fatty acids down into ketone bodies. These are a type of energy molecule the body can use for fuel. The ketogenic diet has become incredibly popular in the last few years because ketones are a more efficient fuel than glucose, especially for people that suffer from neurological or inflammatory conditions. Ketones can also be consumed from supplements and their benefits can be derived without following a strict ketogenic diet.

How Does Ketosis Help You Lose Weight?

When you eat a lot of carbohydrates your body breaks it down to glucose, which is a primary source of energy. In ketosis, however, there’s a lack of glucose, so your body burns stored body fat instead.

Adding more healthy fats to your coffee while fasting means that you enjoy increased energy despite restricting food intake. The main types of fat added to make keto coffee are the following:

Grass-fed Butter

Butter

This is butter that is made from the milk of cows that are fed with grass. Studies have shown that grass-fed butter is healthier than butter made from the milk of grain-fed cows. People who live in countries where cows are primarily fed grass rather than grain actually lower their risk of developing heart disease by eating more butter.

MCT Oil

MCT oil

MCTs are a type of saturated fatty acid. Coconut oil is one of the best sources of MCTs, since around 65% of its fatty acids are composed of this essential healthy fat. MCT oils are a rich source of energy for the body since they are consumed rather than being converted and stored as fat. They can also help you lose weight since they make you feel more full and discourage overeating.

Increased consumption of these two saturated fatty acids also helps to increase production of testosterone, particularly when combined with monounsaturated fatty-acid oils like olive oil and avocado. In contrast, taking more polyunsaturated fatty acids like margarine, canola oil, and sunflower oil can decrease testosterone production.

Keto Coffee Benefits

To summarize, the health benefits of drinking keto coffee include:

  • Increased energy. Increasing your fat intake while eating fewer carbs, encourages your body to use fats as a primary source of energy.
  • Weight loss. Your body is burning fat for energy, not storing it. This means you’re losing fat (adipose) tissue more quickly, and thus losing weight.
  • Lowered risk of heart disease. Taking more saturated fats is actually good for you. Recent studies have shown that adding more saturated fats to your diet can actually lower your risk of heart disease.
  • Fewer hunger pangs. Using fats as your main source of energy makes you feel more satiated, and a lot less tempted to snack and eat between meals. This can help you further manage your weight by reducing unnecessary caloric intake.

There are also some (unproven) claims that a ketogenic diet can help improve cognitive function. One of the most controversial claims was made by the medical doctor Mary Newport, who said that she cured her husband’s Alzheimer’s disease by giving him several spoonfuls of coconut oil daily over a five-year period while lowering his carbohydrate intake.

So far the claims are backed only by anecdotal evidence, and a formal study has yet to be conducted to provide definitive proof that coconut and MCT oils can reverse cognitive decline, and cure Alzheimer’s and other similar diseases.

The ketogenic diet has also been used to manage epilepsy. It is a common form of therapy used to help children who suffer from the disease. One of the major benefits of eating a ketogenic diet is that fewer medications are needed to control the disease.

How to Make Keto Coffee

You will need a blender to make keto coffee because oil and water don’t mix. The only way you will be able to get them to fully combine is by blending them at high speeds.

The following is a basic recipe for making “bulletproof” coffee:

Ingredients:

  • One cup coffee
  • One tablespoon of unsalted grass-fed butter
  • One tablespoon of virgin coconut oil

Optional:

You can add the following ingredients to the basic recipe if you would like to get even more energy out of your keto coffee. Depending on your dietary requirements or your preferred taste, you can adjust the recipe by removing some of the ingredients.

  • Three egg yolks
  • One tablespoon of collagen (hydrolyzed gelatin)
  • A quarter to a half teaspoon of cinnamon
  • A few drops of low carb sweetener such as liquid stevia for taste
  • A low-carb coffee creamer

Procedure:

  1. Brew one cup of coffee using your preferred method.
  2. Pour the coffee into the blender along with the butter and coconut oil, and any other optional ingredients.
  3. Pulse the coffee mixture until smooth and frothy.
  4. Serve.

The basic recipe has 221 calories and 25.2 grams of fat, of which 20.9 grams is saturated fat. If you add all the ingredients above, a cup will have 474 calories and 45.6 grams of fat, of which 29.7 grams will be saturated fat.
