Grapefruit: The Wonder Fruit

By: Femi Agbaje-Williams March 23rd, 2017

The fruit may be bitter, but the results sure are sweet.

I went through a stage in high school where I ate a grapefruit for breakfast everyday. I’d developed a bad habit of bingeing on chocolate on the daily and decided I was going to ‘take control of my health’, by drastically under-eating. Not my best idea.

Despite that, I still love grapefruit, and there are a whole host of ways it’s good for us. Here are just a few.

They speed up your metabolism

When I decided to eat grapefruit for breakfast, this is what drove me, a faster metabolism. It does work though. The Nutrition and Metabolic Research Center found that people who ate half a grapefruit before each meal lost an average of 3.5 lbs over a 12 week period, without making any other changes to their diets. That’s kind of nuts.

They improve your heart health

A study published in the Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry showed that eating just one grapefruit a day could lower LDL cholesterol levels by 15.5%. That’s a pretty significant decrease.

They clean up your skin

Reduce wrinkles, fight sun-induced skin damage, improve the texture of your skin. Grapefruits are packed with antioxidants, vitamins A and C, and water. Vitamin C is good for forming collagen, which makes our skin appear fuller and firmer, and water is of course essential for good skin, as the cells in our skin need water in order to function properly.

You can also combine grapefruit with a little sugar and use it as a natural scrub on your body.

They fight cancer

Grapefruits contain the antioxidant lycopene, which helps prevent the formation of free-radicals, which can cause cancer. It’s been seen to lower the risk of prostate cancer in men, pancreatic, colonic, rectum, oral, esophageal, breast and cervical cancer.

A quick warning:
As with anything, grapefruit needs to be consumed in moderation. Overdoing it can be more harmful than helpful, as it can heighten the effects of prescription drugs, and overconsumption has also been linked to breast cancer.

Half a grapefruit or one grapefruit a day is enough.
